Mapping the Interior (1999)The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for sorting products, and more particularly, to an improved apparatus and method for sorting products in which the apparatus will act as a means for receiving product from an input conveyor and directing the product to sorting modules such as one or more product trays or bins, each of which trays or bins will contain a predetermined product type.
Known types of sorting apparatuses and methods for sorting or classifying products such as logs, have traditionally been very complex and therefore very expensive to manufacture, as well as being subject to frequent breakdowns.
For example, U.S. Pat. No. 5,044,618 (issued to Bauer) discloses an apparatus for sorting lumber into two compartments, one of which receives finished lumber while the other receives unfinished lumber. The unfinished lumber is removed from the apparatus by hand, and the finished lumber is removed by a forklift.
This method and apparatus is relatively complex and subject to breakdowns, as it is necessary to maintain a careful separation of the finished lumber and the unfinished lumber. Further, the finished lumber is removed by hand, which adds significantly to the cost of the sorting process.
Another example, U.S. Pat. No. 4,458,823 (issued to Pape) discloses a method for sorting wood by sorting a plurality of logs into two compartments, one of which receives unfinished wood and the other receives finished wood. The unfinished wood is removed from the apparatus by hand, and the finished wood is removed by a forklift. This method and apparatus requires the use of a large amount of floor space in order to accommodate the storage of the finished lumber.
Further, U.S. Pat. No. 4,730,837 (issued to Phillips) discloses a method and apparatus for sorting produce. The sorted produce is stored in a compartment, which compartment is located in a floor-based housing. A mechanical conveyor operates the produce to the selected compartment, the compartment having a top opening for receiving the produce.
